COORDINATING A COLLABORATIVE

My first job out of school was billed as “Program Coordinator”. It turns out, that stood for “six different jobs mashed into one” and learned on my feet how to do all six over three years with the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative (WVPEC). Some of the roles I performed included accountant, administrative assistant, marketer and communicator, event planner, grantwriter and coordinator, and graphic designer.
The WVPEC, headquartered in West Virginia University’s (WVU) Office of the Provost, is a collaborative made up of educational leaders from across the state and nation. The board includes university presidents and provosts, nonprofit directors, teachers and professors, and more. The WVPEC seeks to support education from preschool to PhD by finding innovative solutions to support educators and learners in the Mountain State.
During my tenure with the WVPEC, I planned and expanded signature events; wrote and produced marketing and communications content; led grantwriting and request for proposal processes; performed financial duties including budgeting, tracking, and reporting; drafted speeches and op-eds; built brand recognition; and served as an ambassador for the collaborative across the state.

The WVPEC’s signature events and intiatives include the Legislators’ Forum on Education and the Economy and the Focus Forward symposium. The Legislators’ Forum brings West Virginia policymakers together with experts on teaching and learning in order to help legislators best support public schools across the state. Focus Forward convenes a diverse, cross-disciplinary group of West Virginian leaders and addresses emerging issues in Appalachia that will impact the next generation of workers and learners.
